Oakencroft Tasting Room
Oakencroft Farm is the birthplace of Virginia winemaking. Since 2019, Alexander Nicholson has worked with the DN Batten Foundation to transform the farm into a sustainable, biodiverse model for the future of agriculture.
The Tasting Room is open to the public, by reservation, to experience Oakencroft’s selection of sustainable wines. Sit indoors in the cathedral-like center room that was converted from an old red barn, or enjoy your wine outdoors on the patio or on the lawn between the Tasting Room and the Oakencroft Center.
Alexander Nicholson spent two years converting the old red barn into today’s Tasting Room. The barn was completely gutted before we reinforced its frame with steel. Installation required removing sections of the barn’s foundation wall, sliding the steel into place horizontally, erecting it with a lift, setting it in concrete, and supporting it with temporary wood framing until one beam’s mirrored partner arrived to complete a self-supporting archway. Seven of these arches were erected, and then connected to each other with horizontal beams woven into and behind the latticework of original wood framing. Sutphin Architecture designed the space to preserve the feel of a traditional barn, while modernizing it to match the aesthetic of the rest of Oakencroft.
Final interior finishes, fixtures, furniture, and decor were selected by Oakencroft’s owner, who also served as interior designer for the Oakencroft Center.
Alexander Nicholson continues to support the growth and development of Oakencroft Farm in what is one of our most cherished local relationships. We’ve built a solar field, the farm manager’s house, and a winemaking facility, as well as the Oakencroft Center adjacent to the Tasting Room.
