Rugby Road Modernist Addition

This traditional brick colonial home near the University of Virginia was completely overhauled with solar power, goethermal heating, battery backup, and countless other carefully considered tech-forward details. We worked tirelessly with the owner to select the best possible equipment for every system in the house, from the custom kitchen exhaust fan to the complex wiring setup that brings everything together. Tucked behind the house is a striking modernist addition designed by Bushman Dreyfus Architects. It incorporates a new kitchen, dining, and living area, as well as a screened porch and a carport with electric charging. The addition’s glass walls open onto a back yard featuring a stone terrace, a custom reflecting pond, a bronze fountain, and a minimalist garden design by Gregg Bleam Landscape Architect. Alexander Nicholson installed a robust drainage system that manages rainwater across the entire property. The most deceptively simple element is the driveway that appears to slope towards the rear of the lot, but, thanks to a perfectly planned and executed concrete pour, actually guides water away away from the house into a system of drains connected to the City’s stormwater system.
