Four Acres

Four Acres, a historic home set on a large (four acre) lot in the City of Charlottesville. It was built in 1910 by noted architect Eugene Bradbury. It was reconstructed after a fire in 1921, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Alexander Nicholson worked with Stoneking von Storch Architects on a major renovation in 2008, resulting in the home being selected by the local chapter of Preservation Virginia as “Private Residential Preservation of the Year.” The six-bedroom, four-bath, 12,433 square foot home with slate and copper roof and four-columned portico was outfitted for the 21st century, including installation of geothermal heating. An additional update includes a limestone terrace. An April 2010 article in the C-ville Weekly includes an email quote from Daniel Bluestone, a Bradbury expert and former professor of architectural history at the University of Virginia: “It is an incredible restoration that will ensure that it will be around for another 100 years.”

In 2020, new owners of Four Acres invited Alexander Nicholson to return for an exquisite custom kitchen renovation designed by Bushman Dreyfus Architects. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, veined marble, textured hand-made tile, and custom brass hardware give the kitchen a striking look that is both traditional and contemporary. The kitchen renovation was featured in Abode C-ville.
