Office for Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects
The new Charlottesville studio headquarters of NBW, an award-winning landscape architecture firm that also has offices in New York City, is a dynamic space consisting of a series of attached light industrial buildings dating from the early 1900s. The building volumes create two courtyards between them. One building functions as a two-story studio, another as a “gathering building” with the central structure functioning as the threshold in between.
The primary courtyard, which accesses the street, provides the entry sequence, terminating at the gathering and meeting space. Alexander Nicholson acted as general contractor, collaborating with members of the NBW team, as well as Metal Is Good, Wispelwey Woodworking and Simin’s Custom Sewing.
